Dear Foundation Families,
We have a few reminders that we would like to share;
Numeracy
Over the past fortnight, our Foundation students have been busy consolidating their understanding of addition and subtraction, with a continued focus on the part-part-whole model. Using hands-on materials like counters and tens frames has helped support their conceptual understanding, and it’s been wonderful to see their confidence growing.
An exciting development is that many students have now started writing number sentences to match their hands-on work. This has extended their thinking and helped them make stronger connections between numbers, symbols, and the real-world situations they represent. It’s been fantastic to watch them experiment with different ways to show their thinking and explain their strategies to others. Keep up the great work, Foundation students!
Literacy
Students are consolidating their alphabet letter names and sounds. In week 5& 6 we have jumped into digraphs. Diagraphs are two letters working together to make the one sound. The diagraphs we have covered are; 'sh' for ship, 'ch' for chair, 'th' for thumb and 'wh' for whistle. In Week 7 we are looking at ng & nk. In Week 8 we will be looking at 'ck' as in duck.
During Weeks 6 and 7 we are learning the heart words 'like' and 'have' and will move onto 'saw' for Week 8. Heart words are essential for students reading and writing success so feel free to practise them at home as much as possible.
We have continued to create short sentences in response to a picture prompt, which we are using to assess their learning ahead of reports.
In Week 7 and 8 we will continue to explore our next fairytale is 'Little Red Riding Hood'.
In Reading, we have now switched to a fluency passage. These will be sent home along side the 2 take home books. We will read the passage each day at school, and would love for it to be read at home.
Reading Fluency Passage 'Sam and the Cat': Encourage your child to read the passage aloud daily, focusing on accuracy, expression, and pacing. Students are super excited for a passage instead of the word list. However, the word lists can still be used.
Fluency Tip: After your child segments and blends individual words, please encourage them to reread the entire sentence smoothly. This practise helps build confidence and supports the development of natural reading fluency. These materials are excellent tools to reinforce the phonics skills we're working on in class.
This term we have been exploring the Inquiry unit 'Who We Are'. We are delving into what are own families are like, the roles we play in our families and will start to explore our own and others roles in the community. We are SUPER excited to have the Fire Brigade back visiting us to learn about fire safety. We learnt about needing to find a safe meeting place with our families, that we could meet our family at if there was ever a fire in the house. They suggest somewhere out the front by the letter box. Please continue this discussion with your child, as it is valuable they understand this.
Thanks for all your support.
