DreamCity Incursion / Inquiry
Last week, our Level 5 students took part in an exciting incursion run by DreamCity School Incursions, where they explored hands-on learning experiences across a range of future-focused careers. Students rotated through engaging workshops including robotics, sports science, and a neonatal nursery simulation. They coded Sphero robots, investigated how science and technology are used in elite sports performance, and discovered the vital role of healthcare professionals in caring for newborns. The day sparked curiosity, encouraged teamwork, and gave students a real-world glimpse into how STEM skills are applied in everyday life.
This week we have continued to analyse why people work, consider the skill and personal requirements of some jobs.
Maths
Our Year 5 students have been diving into the world of decimals. They’ve been learning how to read, write, and rename decimals up to three decimal places, deepening their understanding of place value beyond the tenths and hundredths. To support this learning, students have used Decimats—a powerful visual tool that helps them see how decimals represent parts of a whole. They've also been working with number lines to plot and compare decimals, developing a strong sense of relative size and order. These hands-on strategies are building both confidence and accuracy as students explore real-world applications of decimal numbers.
Literacy
In Reading, students have continued to engage with our mentor text 'Landovel' by Emily Rodda. They have learnt to use comprehension strategies such as making monitoring and clarifying to evaluate information and ideas to build literal and inferred meanings.
In Writing, students finessed their persuasive writing process by planning, drafting and publishing persuasive, choosing text structures, language features, images and sound appropriate to purpose and audience.
