Curriculum Day - Next Friday 6th June - NO SCHOOL
We cannot believe we are halfway through Term 2. Time is flying! Many of our students are showing readiness for high school now, which is fantastic. Thank you to everyone for their efficiency with enrolment forms and paperwork for your nominated secondary schools. We anticipate everyone should hear back about their enrolments in July.
This past fortnight, students have completed their Semester 1 assessments to help inform their reports. Digital copies of reports will be available via Compass on Monday 30th June. Standby for details of how to book a meeting with your child's teacher. These appointments will be held in the stadium like last year, on Tuesday 1st July between 3:45 and 7pm & Wednesday 2nd July from 3:45 to 5pm.
LITERACY
We are now halfway through our mentor text, 'Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow' by Jessica Townsend. Reading has been a welcome escape for students between assessments and other learning. Many of our students are enjoying the exciting world of Nevermoor, championing our protagonist, Morrigan towards her desired place in the Wundrous Society, and marvelling at the magic taking place.
This week we have seen Morrigan pass 2 trials including the Chase Trial where she used Fenestra, a magnificat as her noble steed. We have been using our reading strategies as a lens for unpacking meaning as well as evaluating what makes a good piece of writing. Students have been playing with using descriptions to 'show, not tell' what is happening.
MATHS
In Mathematics, the past fortnight has seen students revise basic concepts and complete assessments. Students are reminded that Mathletics is available for them to access as a way to revise and keep their minds 'mathematically-fit'.
INQUIRY
Our recent trip to the National Capital has helped us to cement much of the required knowledge and understanding of Australia's preferential voting system and being an active participant in democracy. It was exciting to enact a debate within the House of Representatives. We also voted at the Australian Electoral Education Centre and completed a live count of votes to deepen our understanding of preferential voting. It was great to see students aspiring to be active citizens, who wish to campaign for causes they are passionate about.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
This week our students participated in a visual meditation to strengthen their focus mind. It can be helpful for students to identify their emotions as separate from who they are in order to gain control of them. The meditation is called 'The Angry Dragon' and it personifies anger as a dragon.
If you would like to use this meditation at home, here is a link:
Next week, students will have the opportunity to audition for a role in the SEPS Production: A Night at the Museum. Every student from Prep to Grade 6 will participate in the show on September 16th at St Leonard's School. We look forward to working with Kinect2Dance who is helping us to put the show together.
