Years 10,11 & 12

VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies 

The Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education class have been studying the Mitchell River catchment during the term. This has involved inviting a guest speaker from the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to discuss measures taken to remove willows and improve river health, a visit to the Mitchell River at the walking track at Wy Yung, then comparisons with Clifton Creek at Eastwood. Students developed their skills of testing soil and water, and evaluating biodiversity. The final task before their SAC was a day excursion to evaluate the health of the Mitchell River at the Mitchell River Weir and Angusvale. Students had a lovely day out, climbing on the Weir wall, discovering abandoned cars in the bush and playing hide and seek. They all built on their ability to test and understand water health, and credit must be given to Jami, who risked very muddy boots to do multiple tests including turbidity and ph. Everyone involved enjoyed a lovely day in a beautiful part of the world.

Work Experience 

A day in the life of a Landscape Evaluator 

Year 11 student Sam recently spent 5 days doing Work Experience with Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) teams in East Gippsland.  This day was spent with Belinda Rossack, Landscape Evaluator, Gippsland.

VCE VM Mock Interviews

Recently our VCE VM Year 12 students attended Mock Interviews. They conducted themselves in a very professional manner and demonstrated their skills and knowledge through their digital portfolios and a full job application and interview process. 

Thank you to the panellists from the Shire, MEGT, AGA, GELLEN and The Smith Family, that volunteered their time and expertise to assist our students and provide meaningful feedback as our Year 12’s prepare to enter the workforce. 

100 Days until Graduation

Year 12 Students celebrated the countdown to graduation this week, we can't wait to see what you achieve over the coming weeks and where life takes you all.

Year 11 VCE - VM Workshops

Over the past three weeks the Year 11 VCE VM students have been planning, preparing and running workshops in their Work Related Skills subject. These workshops are designed by students to inform their peers about their VET subject and then be upskilled in an activity relating to that subject. 

In the past few weeks, we have learned how to patch holes in pipes from students studying plumbing, woodburning skills from building and construction, how to make slime from students doing childcare, how to create different types of hair braids from students studying hair and beauty, and many other skills. Congratulations to all on an amazing effort with the workshops. 

Environmental Science

Students planned an investigation to measure nitrate and nitrite levels around the school swamp and wetlands, including selecting sites.

VET Cookery Café Series

Staff were spoiled once again by our VET Hospitality students, their Café series cooking a delicious menu consisting of Risotto, Polenta Chips, Beef Kofta and Crème Brûlée.

ADF Career Pathways

BSC Senior students had the privilege of welcoming Jack and Fletcher from the Australian Defence Force to provide information on career pathways and educational opportunities through the ADF. Jack is a Naval Police Coxswain in the Royal Australian Navy and Fletcher is a Chef in the Royal Australian Air Force.

Year 12 English

Year 12 English students are preparing for their last assessment task, which will occur in week 9. This week, they collaboratively planned responses to essay topics so they were able to learn from one another. 

Food Technology

Grace, Amarni and Amber, Ethan and Xy made Apple Tarte Tatin.

Osbourne, Xy and Ethan made Peperonata.

Wilton made a Raspberry and Yoghurt Cake.

Grace, Cassandra, Cooper and Wilton made Eggs Florentine.

REX Program

John Monash Science School is a government science school located on the Monash University campus in Melbourne. The school is open to students from year 10-12, and offers a range of online programs. Each year, they host twenty students from regional areas around Victoria on a weeklong program, running from the 21st to 26th of June. This year for the first time Bairnsdale Secondary Collage sent Year 10 student Banjo, who had to write an application which was then accepted.

While on the program Banjo was fortunate to experience a wide variety of scientific activities, including observing zebra fish in varying stages of their life cycle under a microscope, visiting the Melbourne Syncatron, fencing with the Monash University Fencing Club, and various activities at the JMSS tech school. Banjo found the program a great way to develop his knowledge and enthusiasm for Science. 

“One of the things I really enjoyed was meeting people from other schools with similar interests in science,  it was also great to visit places like the Melbourne Syncatron and all the different parts of the John Monash campus. I would highly recommend and I would definitely encourage anyone interested in science in year ten next year to apply.” - Banjo
