Traffic & Parking Concerns

by David Russell

Dear Parents and Carers

As we conclude term 1 and look ahead to term 2 we want to address an increasing concern that has been observed around our school zones.

It has been noted that many drivers are disregarding traffic rules around the school areas, and while this may be unintentional, the consequences can be serious. Some of the common violations include:

1. Illegal U-Turns: One of the most alarming behaviors is illegal U-turns on busy streets, often in areas where visibility is poor and traffic is heavy. This practice significantly disrupts the flow of traffic and increases the likelihood of accidents.

2. Speeding in School Zones: Despite posted speed limits, there have been frequent reports of speeding in school zones, endangering the lives of students walking or biking to school.

3. Failing to stop for Pedestrians: Many drivers are not stopping for pedestrians at crossings or stop signs. This reckless behavior can be especially dangerous during peak school drop-off and pick-up times when students are crossing streets and navigating busy sidewalks.

4. Blocking Driveways and Crossings: Parking in front of driveways or on crosswalks, making it difficult for other vehicles and pedestrians to move safely. This creates unnecessary congestion and increases the potential for accidents.

5.Distracted Driving: Use of phones or engaging in other distractions while driving near schools. This not only reduces reaction time but also diverts attention from potential hazards in school zones.

The safety of our students should always be our top priority. Many students walk or bike to school, and even those who are driven rely on safe roads and respectful drivers to get them there and back home. Unsafe driving around schools puts everyone at risk — not just our students, but teachers, staff, and even fellow drivers.

We all share responsibility for creating a safe and secure environment around our schools. Poor driving behaviors create chaos and confusion, increasing the risk of accidents. Unfortunately, even minor infractions can have severe consequences, and we do not want to see any child put in harm's way due to careless actions behind the wheel.

We encourage all parents and caregivers to follow the rules of the road and demonstrate the importance of safe driving to our children.

Thank you for your attention to this important issue. Let’s all do our part to protect our children and keep our school zones safe.
