Year 5 News

Reading

This fortnight, the Year 5 students have been developing their comprehension skills by learning how to ask and answer questions about the texts they read. Students are exploring how to use clues and information from the text, as well as their own prior knowledge, to deepen their understanding. They are practising asking questions before, during and after reading, making predictions, identifying key information and using evidence from the text to support their answers. These skills help students become more thoughtful, independent readers who can think critically about what they read and develop a deeper understanding of different texts.

“You should ask questions as you read so you can understand what you read” - Josiah 5A

“It was fun because we got to write the features and I understand more about the text” - Jahnavi 5A

Students put their skills to the test through an exciting game of Battleship, using coordinates to locate ships and strategically plan their moves. They have also been investigating transformations, including translations and rotations, and exploring how shapes can move and change position while maintaining their properties. It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort developing their spatial reasoning, mathematical language, and problem-solving skills while having plenty of fun along the way!

Year 5 students have been exploring what it means to be responsible at school and in their everyday lives. They have been discussing the importance of making positive choices, following expectations, taking ownership of their actions and being accountable for their behaviour. Students have also reflected on how being responsible helps build trust, strengthen relationships and create a positive learning environment for everyone. These skills will support students as they continue to develop independence and prepare for the transition to secondary school.
