Year 2 News

Reading
The Year 2 students have started an exciting text study this term where they are reading and analysing a text, thinking carefully about the characters, the character traits, the setting and making predictions. The students are reading Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox and have been super enthusiastic about finding out more about the fox and what the three mischievous farmers might get up to.
In week 1, the students learnt about farming and foxes and why they might be a pest to the farmers. They used their knowledge about farms and clues from the text to make amazing predictions about the characters and what would happen to a farmer if the fox destroyed his farm.

Writing
In the last week of term 3 students continued to settle into the new Literacy structure. They enjoyed completing some dictation with sentences including words with ‘e’ sound and different spellings of this sound in them. Students also completed handwriting commonly used words that also related to our sound we were focusing on in our Phonics lessons for Week 10.
Students were ready to get straight back into our literacy sessions. They enjoyed completing our dictation sentences with the sentences including words with ‘o’ sound and different spellings of this sound in them. Students also did some handwriting using words that had the ‘s’ sound and spelling in them.
They also used adjectives to describe the character in a prompt. They looked carefully at the character and identified words that describe what the character looked like. Students then choose suitable adjectives and use them to write sentences explaining their ideas. They focused on using interesting describing words to help the reader create a clear picture of the character.

They have also been thinking about how to measure the volume of water in different containers and how using a bottle as a unit of measurement and a cup would provide different results.

Inquiry
During the first week back of Term 4, our Year 2 students have been learning about how they have changed and grown over time. Students reflected on the skills they have developed, the things they can now do independently and the ways they have become more confident and capable as they get older. They particularly enjoyed sharing their achievements and discussing how they have changed since they were younger. Students also began creating their own timelines to show important stages in their lives and highlight how much they have learnt and grown. It has been wonderful to see students celebrating their progress and recognising just how far they have come!

They discussed the importance of having an organised tub and classroom to be able to locate books and our belongings quickly to start our learning straight away.
At the beginning of Term 4, Year 2 students revisited the CPS school values and classroom routines before beginning their new unit on Positive Gender Relationships.

Auslan
During Week 1 of Term 4, our Year 2 students explored 2D shapes and 3D objects in Auslan. Students learnt signs for shape, square, triangle, circle, cube, pyramid and sphere, practising how to use their hands to communicate the shapes and sizes of everyday objects. We also encouraged students to look around the classroom and identify the shapes of items such as drink bottles and tables.
