Foundation & Year 1News

Reading
Foundation and Year 1 students have been developing their reading fluency and making meaning from texts. They have been reading decodable texts that align with the phonics sounds they have learnt, allowing them to apply their decoding skills and build confidence when reading. Students have been participating in choral reading with the whole class before practising their reading with a partner. These opportunities help students develop accuracy, expression and confidence while strengthening their understanding of what they are reading.

Writing
Foundation and Year 1 students have been learning about the difference between sentence fragments and complete sentences. They have been identifying what a fragment is missing and what it needs to become a complete sentence, focusing on including a subject, a verb and a complete thought. Students have also been exploring the roles of heroes and villains in stories, discussing their characteristics, actions and how they influence the events of a narrative. These activities are helping students strengthen their understanding of sentence structure while developing their ideas about characters in stories.

In Week 2 students learnt about the food pyramid and food groups and what a healthy and balanced diet looks like. They had the opportunity to work in small groups to sort foods into the correct food groups using a healthy plate template. Students also looked at their own lunchboxes and explored what foods they had and what food groups they belong to.

Students also explored the importance of fair and friendly play and how they can model these behaviours during outdoor play. With summer approaching, students have been learning about being SunSmart and the ways they can protect themselves from the sun and heat when spending time outdoors.
