What's Happening in Grade 2?

Welcome back to Term 2. The Grade 2 team has had a change due to Ann Gemayel’s retirement. Taking her place is Mrs. Aimee Higgins, we welcome Aimee to the Grade 2 team. We are excited to share what our Grade 2 students have been working on in class so far this term!
Here are some of the highlights from Term 2:
Classroom Systems & Positive Behaviour
This term, we’ve been focusing on our School Wide Positive Behaviours and creating a supportive and respectful classroom environment. We are working on the ‘Expect Respect’ system at this time and this gives students the skills and strategies to support them in showing and receiving respect. Students have been receiving their Classroom Buzz Awards and enjoying rewards for their positive behaviours. It’s been fantastic to see so many students demonstrating respect, resilience, teamwork, and the value of learning!
English – Phonics
During term 2 students have been working on the extended code with a focus on one sound different spellings and one spelling different sounds along with digraphs and other more complicated letter blends. The students have enjoyed the challenges and using the strategies they are learning using the ‘Sounds Write’ program.
Explanation Texts
In English, we’ve been learning about Explanation Texts, focusing on the structure and how to write an explanation text which tells us how to do or make something . Students have been using interesting examples, like the life cycles of frogs and butterflies, and even “How to borrow books from our library,” to practice writing their own explanations. They understand the use of time connectives, the macro sentence and linking sentences, and how to describe a process in detail.
Mathematics – Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction
In Mathematics, we spent the first part of the term exploring Place Value, looking at two and three-digit numbers. Students have been working hard using concrete materials to help them understand how numbers are made up. In the second half of the term, we will focus on Addition and Subtraction strategies, like “make to ten” and “partitioning,” to help students solve problems and strengthen their number skills. We also learned about 2D shapes and measured objects using informal units like hand spans and feet. It’s been so much fun seeing students measure and compare items in creative ways!
Inquiry – Chemical and Physical Science
Wizz Fizz Incursion
The Grade 2s had an amazing time during their science incursion. They are learning about chemical and physical changes. We were able to complete some really fun experiments during our incursion. Make sure you check out the photos.
In the classroom we have been learning about reversible and irreversible changes. We have done some fun experiments to determine whether they are reversible or not.
Special Events
This term has been full of exciting events. The Athletics Day was a highlight, with students showing great teamwork and resilience. Green house took the win for 2026, and many students went home with ribbons! We also celebrated Mother’s Day at assembly and fun classroom activities for students to share with their mothers and carers. The Education Week Expo was another fantastic event, where families enjoyed seeing all the amazing things the students are involved in at school.
We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort our Grade 2 students continue to show in their learning. Thank you for your ongoing support!
