R U OK? Day

Next Thursday, 10 September our school community will recognise R U OK? Day, a national day of action that reminds us of the importance of meaningful connection and checking in with those around us.

Mental health is something we all have and like our physical health, it can change over time. Sometimes people may be experiencing challenges that are not immediately visible to others. A simple conversation, genuine question, or reminder that someone is not alone can make a significant difference.

This R U OK? Day, we encourage students, staff and families, to take a moment to connect with the people around them. Asking “Are you OK?” can be the beginning of an important conversation.

If you notice that someone may be struggling, remember the following:

  1. Ask – “Are you OK?” or “I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately.”
  2. Listen – Give the person time and space to share without judgement.
  3. Encourage action – Support them to identify helpful next steps, such as trusted adults they can speak with or an appointment with their General Practitioner.
  4. Check in – Continue to show that you care by following up.

Importantly, we don't need to have all the answers or know exactly what to say. Often, simply being present, listening and showing genuine care, can help someone feel seen and supported.

This R U OK? Day, let's continue building a school community where asking for help is encouraged, conversations about mental health are normalised and everyone feels that they belong.

A conversation could change a life. So, this coming Thursday, take a moment to ask someone: R U OK?
