TERM THREE PROJECT: PAPIER MACHE MASKS

Students from Foundation to Grade 6 explore papier mâché as a hands-on way to create three-dimensional artworks. Through layering, shaping, joining and decorating paper and paste, students develop fine-motor skills, hand–eye coordination, patience and problem-solving skills. They learn how materials can be manipulated to create form, texture and structure, while developing creativity, planning and perseverance. As students progress through the year levels, they can take increasing responsibility for designing, constructing and refining their artworks, making thoughtful choices about shape, surface, colour and decoration.

Where we got inspiration from: ANCIENT GREEK THEATRE MASKS

Students explored Greek theatre masks and traditional masks as inspiration for creating their own decorative and performance masks. They investigate how masks have been used in plays and storytelling to represent characters, emotions and different roles. In the art classroom, students look at features such as exaggerated expressions, shapes, patterns and colours before designing and constructing their own masks. Through this process, students develop creativity, observational skills, design thinking and an understanding of how art can communicate ideas and stories.
