Online Safety at Home

A Guide to Parental Controls

Keeping children and teenagers safe online is an ongoing challenge for many families. While no single tool can eliminate all online risks, parental controls can play an important role in helping children navigate the digital world more safely. These tools can help filter inappropriate content, manage screen time, monitor device use and limit who children can communicate with online. However, experts recommend using parental controls alongside open conversations, supervision and the development of positive online safety habits.

To support parents and carers, eSafety's parent and carer guide to parental controls provides practical advice on selecting and using parental controls across devices, apps, gaming platforms and home internet networks.

We encourage families to take a few moments to review their current settings and have regular conversations with their children about staying safe online. Working together helps young people build the skills they need to make safe and responsible choices in digital spaces.
