Maths
Over the past three weeks, our Year 6 students have been exploring Cartesian Planes. They have learned how to plot and identify coordinates in all four quadrants, describe how points move across the plane, and explain changes to coordinates as points are translated.
Students also applied their skills by creating 2D shapes using ordered coordinates and extending their understanding by plotting fractions and decimals on scaled Cartesian planes. The unit concluded with a summative assessment, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of these important spatial reasoning skills.
Literacy
As we approach the end of the term, our Year 6 students are wrapping up their class novel, How to Bee by Bren MacDibble. To conclude the text study, students will write a journalistic article exploring the dangers facing bee populations, drawing on themes from the novel and real-world issues. They will also be learning about metaphors, similes, and persuasive techniques, helping them strengthen their writing while making connections to our new Unit of Inquiry.
Reflecting on Our Previous Unit Of I nquiry
We have just concluded our Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, where students explore how different cultures are influenced by many factors. They identified key aspects of a country, including issues affecting its people, customs, values, rituals, celebrations, and lifestyles, while also exploring connections to Australian traditions.
Although shorter than other units, Who We Are was a highlight of the year for many; especially the Mystery Briefcases activity, where Year 4 students investigated the many cultures our Year 6 students had researched.
Introducing Our New Unit Of Inquriy
We're thrilled to launch our new unit of inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, with a focus on how Our needs and wants influence economic activities.
Students have been busy organising themselves into groups and are buzzing with excitement as they brainstorm and plan their very own market stalls! This hands-on inquiry will give them real world experience in economics, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.
So far, each group has:
Come up with a creative name for their stall
Made a list of their needs and wants for their business
Received donation letters to deliver to specific businesses, asking for support and donations
Over the School Holidays
Students will be hard at work preparing for their market stalls during the break. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to take ownership of their learning and get creative with their planning and preparation!

Chat with them about the difference between needs and wants in running a business
