Literacy
Text Studies
In our text studies, students have been using their learning from Bindi to strengthen their information report writing skills. Students revised how to structure an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, and focused on proofreading and editing for clarity. They then applied these skills to a learning task connected to our government systems unit, using their improved writing techniques to explain ideas with accuracy and confidence.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
In Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, Year 5 students have been developing their understanding of the Latin root ‘val’, meaning strong or worthy. They have explored word families, morphemes and word sums while practising spelling through word-building, dictation and sentence-writing activities. In Grammar and Punctuation, students have been learning about appositives, possessive apostrophes, ellipses and commas, applying these skills to expand and combine sentences, show possession and punctuate complex sentences accurately.
Mathematics
Year 5 have wrapped up their work on arithmetic sequences and continued strengthening core number skills, including multiplying 3‑digit numbers, multiplying decimals using renaming, and dividing with remainders, fractional remainders and decimal remainders. Students also completed a summative assessment covering multiplication, addition, subtraction and division, demonstrating strong growth across all areas.
After this, we launched our new unit on probability analysis, where students are beginning to explore chance experiments, outcomes and fairness. An exciting shift into mathematical reasoning and real‑world application.
Book Week Photos
Unit of Inquiry
We have been deepening our understanding of how governments work through our Unit of Inquiry on government systems. Students explored the three levels of government, learned what Parliament is, examined laws, rules and regulations, and followed the full process of passing a bill. They’ve now begun applying this knowledge creatively by designing their own country, working through sections that outline their nation’s size, population and resources, followed by decisions about their government system, levels of leadership, political parties, and how a leader is chosen.
House Athletics Carnival
Year 5 students brought great energy to Athletics Day, giving their best in every event and cheering one another on. Their teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm made the day feel vibrant and full of pride.
Parliament Incursion
Our Year 5 students took part in an engaging Parliament Process incursion, where they explored how Australia’s democratic system works through hands‑on activities and role‑play. Students stepped into the shoes of members of parliament, debated issues, learned how a bill becomes a law, and even participated in a mock election using preferential voting. The session was highly interactive and fun.

What We Are Learning Next
Text Studies
Next term, Year 5 students will begin a new Text Study novel, The Blue Cat by Australian author Ursula Dubosarsky. Set in Sydney in 1942 during World War II, the story follows Columba and her best friend Hilda as they become fascinated by Ellery, a new boy from Europe who cannot speak English, and a mysterious blue cat that appears in their neighbourhood. Through the novel, students will explore themes of friendship, belonging, courage, war and change, while developing their comprehension, inference and analysis skills.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Coming up in our Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar lessons, students will be revising the key skills they’ve built across the term. We’ll revisit important punctuation such as capital letters, full stops, commas and apostrophes, helping students strengthen accuracy and clarity in their writing.
Mathematics
Year 5 are now moving into the next stage of our probability learning. Students will explore how to read and interpret results from chance experiments, talk about whether an event seems fair or unfair, and learn why doing more trials helps us make better judgments. This will lead into a short summative assessment where students apply everything they’ve learned about outcomes, fairness and repeated trials.
Inquiry
The students will continue building their countries by creating the laws and values that guide how their society works. They’ll then move on to designing a national flag and adding extra details such as their currency, anthem, and other unique features.
