Speaking and Listening: Show and Tell
Over the past few weeks, the Prep children have enjoyed bringing in a range of special items to share with the class as part of our current PYP Unit of Inquiry, How the World Works.
Our central idea for this unit is:
“Climate and the types of materials available determine the structures that can be built.”
The children have done a wonderful job sharing their items with their classmates and explaining how they connect to our learning.
Show and Tell provides valuable opportunities for children to develop their speaking and listening skills, including speaking clearly, sharing ideas with confidence and listening attentively to others.
Their favourite part is always answering questions from their classmates at the end! It has been fantastic to see the children growing in confidence as they share their knowledge and experiences with the class.
Book Week
Tuesday 25 August was a very special day in our classrooms as we celebrated Book Week!
The day began with our exciting whole school Book Week Parade. All the children came dressed as their favourite book characters, and it was wonderful to see the school filled with so many colourful and creative costumes. Each year level took turns parading around the circle and dancing to music, creating a fantastic atmosphere of fun and excitement!
Our wonderful comperes, Miss Maxwell and Mr Stanbrook, kept everyone entertained throughout the parade with their enthusiastic commentary and plenty of laughs!
The Prep children enjoyed bringing one of their favourite books to share with their friends. They loved talking about their books, showing the illustrations and telling their classmates why their chosen story was special to them.
Over the past couple of weeks, the children have thoroughly enjoyed listening to a wonderful variety of special books and taking part in lots of fun Book Week activities.
These experiences have encouraged our Preps to explore new stories, share their ideas and let their imaginations grow.

Fathers and Special Friends Celebration
On Tuesday 1 September, our Prep children enjoyed a very special afternoon celebrating the wonderful fathers and special friends in their lives.
The classroom was filled with excitement as the children welcomed their special guests to spend some time with them in their classroom.
The children had been very busy preparing some thoughtful activities and gifts.
Once they were seated, the Preps proudly presented their dads and special friends with a lovely handmade tie. The children had put lots of thought and creativity into making their ties, which were a wonderful keepsake.
The children and their special guests then worked together on a creative building activity. They decorated and constructed 3D houses, carefully adding their own special touches before bringing them together to create a colourful and imaginative village.
It was wonderful to see the children sharing ideas, working cooperatively and proudly showing their guests their creations. There was even a bit of friendly competition with some Preps and their dads adding extra touches, like a second story, picket fence, garage and even a swimming pool!
A big thank you to all of our fathers and special friends for joining us and making the afternoon so special. The Preps had such a lovely afternoon!

Inquiry - How the World Works
In Prep we have begun a new PYP Unit of Inquiry under the theme How the World Works.
Our central idea for this unit is:
“Climate and the types of materials available determine the structures that can be built.”
To get started, we spent some time unpacking our central idea and talking about what we thought it might mean. We looked at some of the key words and shared our first ideas before coming up with our own wonderings, things we would like to find out and learn more about during the unit.
Our wonderings have included questions like:
- How do you make solar panels?
- Why do some houses have really steep roofs?
- What materials are used to build houses in hot or cold places?
- Why are some houses built on stilts?
- What is the tallest building in the world?
We have also been exploring different types of homes and buildings from around the world and thinking about how they are designed to suit the environment they are built in.
We have discussed igloos, chalets, machiyas, floating homes, rondavels and yurts, noticing how the climate, available materials and local surroundings influence their design.
