 5/6 CLASSROOM

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you all had a restful break.

It's been lovely welcoming the students back this week and hearing all about their holidays. We have a busy and exciting term ahead, with plenty of opportunities for learning, trying new things, and working together.

Thank you for your continued support. I'm looking forward to another great term with our Grade 5/6 class at St Mary's.

English

In English, we've started reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. As the story is set in Poland, we're using this as the focus for our information report writing, learning more about the country and its history along the way. We're also exploring relative clauses, looking at when they're essential or non-essential, and using dependent and independent clauses to make our writing more detailed and engaging.

Maths

In Mathematics, we're focusing on location and transformation. Students are learning how shapes can be reflected, translated and rotated, and are beginning to describe the changes they notice using the correct mathematical language. We'll be using a range of hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks to help build confidence and develop a deeper understanding of how shapes move without changing their size or shape.

Art

In Visual Arts, we're exploring how creativity doesn't depend on expensive materials. This term, students will be creating artwork using everyday and found objects, encouraging them to see the creative possibilities in things they already have at home. We've begun by exploring what can be achieved with just a greylead pencil and paper, learning how different shading techniques can create texture, depth and shadow. Students are practising these skills by creating a range of tonal values before applying them to 3D shapes, helping them develop confidence in drawing and observation.
