Science

Grade 3/4s 

This term the Grade 3/4 students will work through two units in science. First students will be engaging with the unit ‘Solids and Liquids’ which will be running from weeks 1-6, before starting the unit ‘Gases’ for the rest of the term. 

During their first science lesson of the term, the Grade 3/4s focused on the properties of solids and liquids. They observed how ice cubes and water sit in a container and move between containers, to discuss flow, shape retention, and space taken. We also discussed the difference between materials and objects. 

For the next fortnight, students will be focusing on comparing and classifying materials as solids or liquids and observing state changes from solid to liquid and back again. 

Focus vocabulary for the rest of the term: 

Material: Something that is made of matter that can be used for a specific purpose or in the creation of objects. 

Matter: Anything that takes up space. 

Object: A non-living thing that is made up of materials. 

 

Grade 5/6s 

This term the Grade 5/6 students will work through two units in science. First students will be engaging with the unit ‘Manipulating Light’ which will be running from week 1-5, before starting the unit ‘States of Matter’ for the rest of the term. 

During their first science lesson of the term, students focused on mirrors and developing an understanding of how a reflection is made and the movement of light rays. They discussed what kinds of surfaces can show a reflection, as well as learned about how rays move on these surfaces and how our eyes perceive these movements. 

For the next fortnight, students will be focusing on light refraction and identifying how light can be absorbed, reflected or transmitted through objects. 

Focus vocabulary for the rest of the term: 

Opaque: An opaque object doesn’t let any light through. 

Ray: A straight line of light that travels from a light source, like the Sun or a torch. 

Reflection: An image that you can see in a mirror or in a glass of water when light bounces off the surface.
