Year 5/6 News

Writing
As writers, students completed and published their historical narratives based on topics from our Inquiry unit, including the First Fleet, the Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade. A major focus this week was on proofreading and editing, with students carefully rereading their work to identify spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, as well as opportunities to improve their word choice and sentence structure. They were encouraged to view writing as an ongoing process, making thoughtful revisions to strengthen their ideas and enhance the overall quality of their narratives before publishing their final pieces.
Maths
As mathematicians, students completed their unit on Probability, developing their understanding of chance and the likelihood of events through practical investigations. They have now begun their learning about Decimals, where they are exploring place value beyond whole numbers and learning to recognise, compare and represent decimal numbers, as well as make connections between decimals and fractions.
Inquiry
Students have continued progressing with their Inquiry Project, where they are investigating a significant event from Australia’s past. This week, the focus has been on locating and evaluating reputable sources of information. Students have learned the importance of supporting their findings with evidence and have begun incorporating direct quotes from their sources to strengthen the credibility of their research. These skills will help students communicate their ideas more effectively and support their conclusions with reliable evidence.
Religion
This week, we were fortunate to welcome Father Tien to our classroom to deepen our understanding of the Mass. Students learned about the two main parts of the Mass: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Father Tien also explained how singing during Mass is one way we can praise God and express our faith. Throughout the session, students explored how participating in the Mass helps us strengthen our relationship with Jesus and connect more deeply with our faith.
