Year 3 News

Welcome to Week 9! We extend our congratulations to the Year 4 students who celebrated their First Holy Communion over the weekend. With the holidays fast approaching, it has been another busy and productive week in Year 3.
As readers, we have recently finished reading Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon and thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Not only were we entertained by the humorous adventures of Yirra and her mischievous dog, Demon, but we also gained valuable insights into contemporary Aboriginal culture, traditions, family life and community connections. Throughout our novel study, we developed our comprehension skills by making predictions, inferring character feelings and discussing key themes.
As writers, we have begun drafting the introduction to our factual recounts about the Stolen Generation from the perspective of an Aboriginal child, parent or government official. We are drawing on the facts we gathered from informative videos and picture books, including Stolen Girl, to develop historically informed and thoughtful pieces of writing. To make our recounts more engaging and descriptive, we are also using the five senses.
As mathematicians, we have revisited addition and subtraction concepts and have been developing our understanding of adding 3-digit numbers. We have been using concrete materials and the number line strategy to model and solve problems.
As a faith-filled community, we have been learning about the Scripture story The Feeding of the Five Thousand. Through this story, we explored how God can do great things when we place our faith in Him. We presented this scripture story at 3DG’s assembly. Congratulations 3DG for doing a wonderful job of hosting your very first assembly!
This week our learning will include:
