Student Wellbeing

Week 6 has been another wonderful opportunity to continue developing the social and emotional skills that help our students understand themselves, connect with others and contribute positively to our school community. This week, our wellbeing learning has focused on recognising emotions, understanding friendships and continuing to build the skills needed to navigate relationships with empathy and kindness.
Understanding Emotions in Foundation
This week, our Foundation students in FLW have been exploring the world of emotions through The Colour Monster. Students have been learning to identify and name different emotions and consider how feelings can look and feel different from one person to another.
Students will create their own Colour Monster by colouring it to represent a particular emotion. This activity will provide an opportunity to connect colours with feelings and develop the vocabulary needed to talk about emotions. By building this emotional literacy, students are beginning to recognise their own feelings and communicate how they are feeling with others.
Building Positive Friendships in Year 1
Our Year 1 students have continued to explore the qualities that help friendships grow and remain positive. Students have been unpacking what it means to be a good friend and considering the ways our words and actions can make others feel included, valued and respected.
Through discussions and activities, students have explored qualities such as kindness, honesty, respect, empathy, sharing and listening. This learning will continue to support students as they develop the skills to build strong friendships and respond positively to the different experiences that can occur within relationships.
What influences our emotions in Year 3
As part of TRP, our Year 3 students explored Lesson 10: What Influences Our Emotions? Students learnt about the connection between our thoughts, emotions and actions, and explored how unhelpful thoughts can influence the way we feel.
Students discussed different examples of unhelpful thoughts and practised turning them into more helpful and positive thoughts. They also learnt about how our brain influences our thoughts and emotions, helping them to develop a greater understanding of why we might respond differently to situations.
Our Character Strengths in Year 5/6
As part of TRP, our Year 5/6 students explored Lesson 16: Character Strengths. Students learnt about the different character strengths we can develop and demonstrate, and reflected on the strengths they see in themselves.
Students identified their own character strengths and explored how these strengths can be used as part of positive self-talk and coping strategies. They then created self-portraits, surrounding themselves with statements that highlighted their individual character strengths.
It was wonderful to see students recognising and celebrating the qualities that make them unique and considering how they can draw on their strengths when faced with challenges.
Continuing to Build Emotional Literacy
Across our wellbeing program, we continue to emphasise the importance of being able to recognise, name and communicate our emotions. Developing emotional literacy helps students understand themselves and others and provides them with the language they need to seek support, solve problems and navigate challenging situations.
We look forward to continuing this learning throughout the term as we support our students to build positive relationships, develop self-awareness and strengthen the skills they need to thrive within our school community.
Stay tuned for the next Newsletter as we engage in Bully No Way, National Week of Action.
