Year 5/6 News

In Religion, we learnt about Mary MacKillop and Mary Glowrey and how they reflected the mission of Jesus through their lives and actions. We explored the idea that Christians are called to be people of hope, becoming part of making things better for others. Students worked with a partner to research the lives, challenges and service of these inspiring women and how they brought hope to others. We then reflected on how we can show hope, care and compassion through our own actions.

In The Resilience Project, we have been learning about character strengths and how they can help us build positive self-talk. Students identified their top five character strengths and created self-portraits surrounded by the strengths that make them unique. We also explored how we can use these strengths and positive self-talk as a coping strategy when faced with challenges.

In Reading, we continued exploring our class novel, The Last Bear, developing our understanding of the characters, setting and key themes. We also completed a linked reading task using the Polar Bears and Plastic Pollution information article, where students explored how plastic travels through our environment and impacts polar bears. To demonstrate their understanding, students created a comic strip showing the ‘journey of plastic’ from its use to its impact on the environment and wildlife.

In Inquiry, we continued our learning about animals and conservation. Students explored endangered Australian species, endangered species from around the world, and animals that are now extinct. We investigated some of the reasons animals become endangered or extinct and considered the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitats.
