Grade 6 News

Welcome back for Term 2!
We hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break and spent some quality time with friends and family. It has been wonderful to welcome the students back to school, and they have all hit the ground running by following our behaviour routines and working hard during class time.
We have another busy and exciting term ahead, with plenty of learning to be enjoyed.
In Literacy, students have begun reading our new novel, Us Mob Walawurru by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. The story follows a young Aboriginal girl named Ruby as she lives and works on a large cattle station in northern Australia during the 1960s. As part of our learning, we will be exploring the 1967 Referendum, which will form the basis of our writing piece early in the term. This learning also ties in nicely with our Humanities unit on Federation, where students will explore the events that led to important decisions being made in the lead‑up to, and immediately following, Australia’s Federation.
In Maths, students have begun the term by exploring the Area and Perimeter of regular and composite shapes. They have learned how to use formulas to calculate these measurements and explored the relationship between area and perimeter for different rectangles. Moving forward, students will complete learning on Time before beginning our unit on Fractions.
Excitingly, Term 2 also provides the opportunity for students to participate in Interschool Sports. A permission note will be sent home shortly. There has already been a great deal of excitement and anticipation among the students, and we are very much looking forward to it.
As always, please continue to encourage nightly reading at home, with entries recorded in students’ Reading Diaries.
Thanks, The Grade 6 Team
