Spotlight on Learning

Year FOUR - Jericho Community

Dear Families,

Gallery Image

This week, students discussed Catholic Education Week and reflected on this year’s theme, “Every School a Home of Peace.” This theme draws inspiration from the scripture verse, “Peace I leave with you,” says the Lord, “my own peace I give you” (John 14:27).

Through class discussions inspired by the example of Saint Francis of Assisi, students explored how we can show peace, kindness and respect within our school and wider community. Next week, we look forward to celebrating Multicultural Day and Pentecost as we recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity within our community and reflect on Pentecost as the birthday of the Catholic faith.

Learning for Year 4

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students explored the meaning of Reconciliation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. They developed an understanding of why reconciliation is important and reflected on how we can all contribute to reconciliation by showing respect, care, and support for all people in our community.

English:

In English, students developed their reading, writing, vocabulary and handwriting skills. They practised correct letter formation and spacing, responded to questions from Uncle Xbox, and improved reading fluency with accuracy and expression. Students also used vocabulary from the novel and worked on expanding sentences by adding detail and using adjectives to make their writing more descriptive.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students have been learning how to work with decimal numbers to hundredths. They have practised placing and identifying decimals accurately on a number line and labelling them correctly. Students are developing confidence in understanding the value of hundredths and how they are represented in decimal form.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students explored how people and communities care for and protect environments. They identified different ways environments are protected and discussed how people look after places in their local and wider community. Students also considered why protecting the environment is important for the future.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students reviewed and practised learnt signs, focusing on using facial expressions to support meaning. They used head shakes to show opposites, raised eyebrows for closed questions, and lowered eyebrows for open-ended questions to improve communication and understanding.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social Emotional Learning, students explored how we are similar to and different from others, developing an understanding of individual strengths, interests, and differences. They also identified strategies that help them cope with challenges or stress, building awareness of ways to support their own wellbeing in different situations.
