Spotlight on Learning
Year FIVE - Bethany Community
Dear Families,
As part of Catholic Education Week, students explored this year’s theme, “Every School a Home of Peace,” reflecting on Jesus’ words from John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my own peace I give you.” Inspired by the example of Saint Francis of Assisi, students discussed ways we can bring peace, compassion and understanding to our daily interactions with others. We are also looking forward to next week’s celebrations of Multicultural Day and Pentecost, where we will celebrate the rich cultural diversity within our community and recognise Pentecost as the birthday of the Catholic faith.
Religious Education:
In Religious Education, students learnt about Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit came to the disciples, giving them courage and power. They explored the symbols of the Holy Spirit, including wind and fire, and discussed how the disciples were changed through the coming of the Holy Spirit.
English:
In English, students strengthened their reading, writing and grammar skills through a range of activities. They practised handwriting speed loops for double ‘f’, improved typing accuracy, explored direct speech, and built reading fluency and vocabulary through our class text. Students also used similes and coordinating conjunctions in their writing, and planned and wrote an engaging introduction paragraph for a narrative non-fiction text set in a maritime setting.
Mathematics:
In Maths, students learnt how to find unknown numbers in multiplication and division equations. They used inverse operations to solve problems and explain their mathematical thinking when working through number equations.
Integrated Curriculum:
In Integrated Studies, students explored the Asia-Pacific region and learnt about the countries, cultures and geographical features that make this area diverse and significant. They developed their understanding through discussions, mapping activities and research tasks.
Auslan:
In Auslan, students explored how facial expressions add meaning to signs. They practised using head shakes and eyebrow movements to identify, ask and respond to open and closed questions.
Social & Emotional Learning:
In Social Emotional Learning, students explored trusted sources of help at school, at home and in the community. They also practised help-seeking conversations to build confidence in asking for support when needed.
