Spotlight on Learning

Year TWO - Damascus Community

Dear Families,

This week, Year 2 students continued building confidence across all learning areas through hands-on activities, storytelling and collaborative learning experiences. In English, students created imaginative narratives with detailed characters, settings and events, while also practising editing and improving their writing. In Mathematics, students explored addition and subtraction using dominoes and hands-on materials, developing a stronger understanding that the equals sign means “the same as”.

Students also deepened their understanding of Pentecost and the Hail Mary prayer, explored ways to care for Country, and built confidence communicating in Auslan through signs, facial expressions and interactive games. It has been wonderful to see students showing increasing independence, creativity and kindness throughout their learning this week.

Learning for the Week Ahead

Religious Education:

Students will learn about National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, exploring why saying sorry, showing kindness and building fairness are important. They will reflect on ways we can care for others, build reconciliation and show respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.

English:

Students will continue developing their writing by creating compound sentences using conjunctions such as and, but, so and or. They will also write about their family culture, traditions and celebrations while building confidence using descriptive vocabulary and detailed sentences.

Integrated Curriculum:

Students will continue learning about caring for Country by exploring the importance of water and how Aboriginal peoples have cared for land and water for thousands of years. They will also investigate how fire can be used to care for Country and protect plants, animals and the environment.

Auslan:

Students will continue building confidence using signs, eye contact and facial expressions to communicate meaning in Auslan. Through games and interactive activities, students will practise using signs in different spaces and situations.

What you can do at home

  • Read together each night and talk about the story. Ask your child to retell the beginning, middle and end of the story, or describe how a character solved a problem.

  • Practise maths in everyday life by using simple addition and subtraction. Dominoes, cards, toys or snacks can be used to show that both sides of an equation need to be the same.

  • Talk and share signs together by asking your child to teach you an Auslan sign or facial expression they have learned at school. Practising together helps build confidence and communication skills.
