Spotlight on Learning

Year SIX - Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 6! On Tuesday, a large number of students participated in the Australia-wide Mathematics Competition focused on computational and algorithmic thinking. Well done to all students involved for their enthusiasm and willingness to challenge themselves.

On Wednesday, we celebrated Catholic Education Week with a special Mass. Some of our Year 6 leaders were also given the opportunity to welcome and speak with visiting families throughout the week, representing our school with confidence and pride.

This week we also celebrated Walk to School Day. Thank you to all the students who participated and to those who helped out on the day. It was wonderful to see so many students involved and promoting healthy and active lifestyles.

Finally, this week marked our last session with the St Peter’s Creative Physical Education Clinic. Students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the program over the past weeks and developed their teamwork, confidence, and movement skills along the way.

Learning for the Week Ahead

Religious Education: In Religious Education, students are learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation and exploring the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Students are developing their understanding of how the Holy Spirit guides people to live with kindness, love, patience, and faith.

English: In English, students are building their background knowledge through reading supplementary non-fiction texts, note-taking, and researching topics such as voting in Australia and changing the Australian Constitution. Students will then apply their understanding by planning and writing a factual recount.

Mathematics: In Mathematics next week, students will be learning how to subtract decimals using a range of mental and written strategies. Students will practise solving problems involving decimals and apply their understanding to real-world situations.

Integrated Curriculum: In Geography, students are learning about how people cause changes to the environment and how places around the world are connected. They are also learning about the greenhouse effect in a simple way and how human activities can impact the environment.

Auslan: In Auslan, students are learning that verb signs can be moved in signing space to show where actions happen. Students are using signing space to give and follow directions and are practising signs such as birthday song, write, who, finish, me, good, quiet, sit, stand, work, why, again, and a range of depicting signs.

Social & Emotional Learning: In SELS, students will be focusing on Reconciliation Week and developing their understanding of the importance of truth-telling, respect, and healing. Families may like to continue these conversations at home by reading and discussing the book Sorry Day together.
