Threatened Species Day
Threatened Species Day was held on Monday 7 September and serves as a reflection on extinction and habitat loss while celebrating ongoing conservation successes and community action. Over 1,700 native flora and fauna species are officially listed as threatened under Australian environmental law, with additional species continually assessed due to pressures like invasive predators, climate extremes, and habitat fragmentation. The Climate Canons observed this day with find and save the threatened species and a quiz highlighting threatened species. Thank you to all the students who got involved on the day.
National Koala Day
National Koala Month is all September and was observed by the Climate Canons on Wednesday 16th with the annual Save the Koala Day dedicated to raising awareness about Koalas and their habitat. Koalas are one of Australia’s most iconic and beloved animals, but they face threats from habitat loss, climate change, disease, and human activity, contributing to population declines. Students had to “feed” the Koala, challenge their memory and try the Koala puzzles to learn more about protecting this beautiful animal.
Buy Nothing New October
October is Buy Nothing New Month. This is a one-month challenge that encourages you to find alternatives to buying new. Instead of buying something, can you get it second-hand, or borrow or rent it short-term? The Climate Canons will be hosting a number of events in Term 4 to encourage sustainable lifestyle choices. Over the school holidays, families might like to try some ideas for Buy Nothing New Month:
Pledge to buy nothing new (with the exception of essentials like food, hygiene and medicines).
If you really need something - rent, borrow or buy it second hand.
Fix something instead of replacing it.
Join your local freecycle group.
Hold a "swap party" at home or work.
We are requesting that during the holidays, families look for old mobile phones that are no longer needed, in any condition, including their cords be dropped off to Student Services between weeks 4.1 and 4.4 for the Mobile Phone Muster. Climate Canons will recycle these on your behalf.
We are also hosting a BOOK SWAP event in week 4.3. Check your bookcases for any books you no longer want or have read and drop them off to Student Services during weeks 4.1 and 4.1 for an opportunity to swap for new books!
Keep an eye on your Direqt Messages for all the details.
