Year 9 HASS History Excursions
The Army Museum of Western Australia collects, preserves, and exhibits the history of the Australian Army in Western Australia. Located in the Fremantle Artillery Barracks, the Year 9 History students explored the Colonial, World War One, Trenches and Modern Soldier exhibits during weeks 8 and 9.
Students had the opportunity to meet with volunteers, veterans, and serving members of the army to learn more about what it would have been like for soldiers fighting at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Our Year 9 students saw the difference in development of uniforms and technology over time from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
They experienced battle tactics and learned a better understanding of the conditions, food rations, expectations, and fears of our soldiers. Students wore gas masks, tried bully beef, heard the terrifying sound of a gas warning system, tried on uniforms, metal bullet-proof vests and held weapons. We are grateful to the serving men and women who were present on the day, who took time out of their schedule to meet with our students and assist them with their work for their Task 6 assessment.
Thank you to all staff who attended over the three days, this was an informative and engaging experience for all honouring and remembering such a significant time in world and Australian history.
