Australian Signals Directorate

Ritkriti Melam attended the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Cyber Security and Robotics Work Experience Program at the Australian Cyber Security Centre in Canberra from 7 – 11 July 2025. The ASD Work Experience Program is designed to challenge participants over a 5-day period in a number of exciting fields within cyber security, mathematics, intelligence analysis and ICT. Participants are required to have a high level of aptitude in relevant STEM areas and have a keen interest in learning new skills.

The program required Ritkriti to complete a number of challenges utilising a range of tools and techniques used in the industry. She worked on individual tasks as well as group activities and engaged in activities including programming, intercept and encrypt, forensic analysis and investigation, web application and security, cryptanalysis, geospatial analysis, and prototyping with an Arduino. There was also a requirement to engage with mentors and fellow students and demonstrate communication, team work, creative and critical thinking skills.

I was really excited and honoured to be one of just 16 students selected from across Australia, and one of only two girls, to attend the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Cyber Security and Robotics Work Experience Program in Canberra.

Throughout the week, I took part in hands-on activities like programming, cryptography, digital forensics, web application and security, geospatial analysis, open source intelligence, and robotics. I worked both independently and in teams, solving real-world problems and learning new tools used in the cyber security industry.

I absolutely loved the experience. It was intense, inspiring, and so much fun. I learned a lot, made great connections, and left feeling even more excited about a future in STEM and cyber security. I really thank everyone at Wantirna college who helped me with my application and who supported me to make it there.  ~Ritkriti Melam, Year 11
