State Cross Country 2025

Whilst the majority of Wantirna College students had a day off from school on Thursday 24th July, five of our best Cross Country runners headed to Yarra Glen Racecourse for the SSV State Cross Country Championships.

Our day got off to a flyer with Chloe Grund winning the State Championships, in the 12-13 Year Girls event, placing 1st in a time of 11 minutes 32 seconds for 3km, winning by a total of 16 seconds! Chloe also won the State Championships last year where she represented Heathmont, thank goodness she made the switch the Wantirna! We are very excited to see what the future holds for her, please join me in congratulating Chloe, our State Champion.

Other results throughout the day included Chase Makaay who finished 17th in the 12-13 Year Boys and ran a time of 11:41 for 3km, Chase has made the State Finals at Primary School in the past and has a very exciting future ahead of him. Georgia Zabilowicz finished 70th in the 14 Year Girls event in a time of 14:27 for 3km in her first time representing Wantirna at State XC. Jayvel Singh finished 46th in the 17-20 Year Boys in a time of 18:13 for 5km, Jayvel also represented Wantirna last year at State XC so what a fantastic effort to make it back-to-back. Lastly, we had Holly Makaay finished 4th in her event, the 17-20 Year Girls, she ran 11:50 for the 3km and like Jayvel, Holly also represented Wantirna at State last year. No doubt she will be back next year and will be hoping to make it onto the podium. This was by far our most successful cross country in recent times.

Congratulations once again to these 5 for not only qualifying for the State Championships but also for giving their best effort and being a fantastic representative of the college. A special mention to the families who came and supported on the day, we couldn't do it without you!

See you all at the Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 12th August on the brand new track at Knox!

Congratulations to our Senior Girls AFL Team!

Who came first at the Eastern Metro Regionals this week and will be off to play at the State!

Year 7 Boys Netball

Year 7 boys were selected from two try-outs, and have been practicing very hard, often twice a week for the last 5 weeks to prepare for Regionals. I was exceptionally proud of how well the boys trained in the lead up to the event, and on the day.

All the boys had to learn how to play a new sport, and their basketball skills came in handy in both goals and defence. Everyone was eager to learn, listen, and put into action all the training we did to make sure we went well in Regionals. Our result is due to every single boy's hard work, effort and training. It was a pleasure to take the boys out and to come away with the result we did, and I hope the boys sign up again next year.

Netball was an awesome day as both Year 7 & 8 were part of the reginal competition for Wantirna College. We played hard and gave it our all, with school spirit and never going down without a fight.  Overall we won 2 and drew 1 so we made it to the semi-finals where we just lost to Norwood Secondary College. We did our best and in our opinion we were spectacular. In the end we were 3rd out of 7 teams. This was an overall incredible day loved by the year 7 boys team. Shoutout to Ms Watt for coaching.

Junior Boys Netball - EMR Round

On Monday 28 July, the Year 7 and 8 Boys Netball Teams went to Waverley Netball Centre to participate in the EMR round. They went into the day with very positive attitudes and represented the school at a very high standard. Through out the day, both teams fought hard against the other schools with some very convincing wins, a couple of draws and a nail biting semi-final.

The Year 8 Boys, won each of their standard round games by great margins with all players working very hard. We had incredible diving saves of the balls that were going out, spectacular intercepts and great goals. They made it through to the semi, winning over Norwood in a penalty shot on the siren. The boys played against Balwyn in the Grand Final and fought very hard against an opposition who was much taller than them.

The team unfortunately lost however their efforts were rewarded on multiple occasions with very good turn overs and goals. MVP for the day was Fergus who had great second efforts, an incredible understanding of the game play to be able to read and take intercepts and wonderful back up for his attackers moving down the court.
