Literacy

We are starting the term by exploring the mechanics of writing during our daily writing sessions. We will be focusing on the importance of using capital letters and full stops, as well as ensuring that each sentence communicates a complete idea or thought. Students are developing their confidence in constructing sentences and are learning to check that their writing makes sense.

In Reading, we are exploring a range of reading strategies, including visualising (creating a picture in our minds as we read) and questioning (asking questions before, during and after reading). We will also be thinking about the purpose of a text and why an author has chosen to write it. Students will continue to use both fiction and non-fiction texts to practise and develop these important reading strategies.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been learning all about data. We have discussed how data is information that can tell us something and explored how we can collect, organise and represent data.

Students have been learning about what makes a good question for collecting data and have had the opportunity to collect their own data and represent it using graphs. We have also been learning how to look closely at the data we collect and identify what we can observe and what it tells us.

The students particularly enjoyed sitting at the front of the school and recording the colours of the cars driving past. There certainly seemed to be a LOT of grey and white cars!

Integrated Studies

Our Integrated Studies topic this term is Mini Makers. Students will be exploring the design process and investigating the suitability of different materials and techniques for creating and constructing.

Throughout the unit, students will have the opportunity to experiment with different materials, learn a range of construction strategies and techniques, and put their new knowledge into practice by designing and creating their own construction.

We are looking forward to seeing the wonderful creations they come up with!

Wellbeing

This term, we are continuing our learning about the Zones of Regulation. Students will explore the different zones and develop an understanding that all emotions are okay. We will discuss how our emotions can affect the way we think and behave and explore strategies we can use to help ourselves self-regulate.

Students will be introduced to a range of different ‘tools’ and strategies that they can use to help them recognise how they are feeling and make positive choices about what they need to feel ready to learn.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. We have loved watching the students grow and develop throughout Grade 1 and are looking forward to making the most of our final term together!

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
