Learning in Year 5

English
This week, students have finished writing their leadership speeches and have begun practising our speech night run-throughs. The excitement in the classroom has been fantastic as students prepare to share their speeches with their families. They have put so much effort into developing their ideas, writing their speeches and building their confidence, and we cannot wait to see them take the stage. We are so proud of the way they have challenged themselves and we know they will make their families and themselves proud!
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have wrapped up our unit on measurement. Students have been developing their understanding of different units of measurement and practising how to convert between them. They have also been analysing timetables and applying their knowledge of time to real-world situations. To finish the unit, students explored area and perimeter, using their skills to solve a range of practical problems.
Reading
We have officially wrapped up our class novels! After spending the term exploring our novels, developing reading strategies and analysing characters, settings and language, students have enjoyed watching the accompanying movie. They have been comparing the books and movies, identifying similarities and differences. It has been a fun way to celebrate all of the reading we have done this term.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, we have taken a deep dive into roasting and the impact that teasing and mocking can have on others. Students explored different types of roasting and considered when something may be playful and when it can become hurtful or unkind. They learnt to identify the green, yellow and red traffic lights of roasting, explain the impact roasting can have on people and explore appropriate ways to respond when they experience or witness it. Students also developed strategies for responding respectfully and recognising when it is important to stop or seek help.
Integrated Studies
To celebrate the end of our Wages, Work and the World unit, our Year 5 students headed down to Eastland for a well-deserved celebration! Students enjoyed a day of mini golf, bowling and karaoke with their classmates. It was a great opportunity to put their teamwork, communication and social skills into practice while celebrating all of their hard work throughout the unit. Some students were even lucky enough to experience a special solo performance from Miss Jade, featuring a song from Wicked! Needless to say, it was a memorable way to finish our unit!
