Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
I have recently been reading Mother Teresa – A Life for God, a collection of her reflections, prayers and responses from interviews throughout her many years of ministry. Mother Teresa has long been someone I deeply admire, and I have been particularly challenged and encouraged by two things as I have read.
Firstly, her undeniable love for Jesus, and secondly, her deep conviction that every action we take is an opportunity to express our love for God.
Mother Teresa speaks so simply yet powerfully about how even the smallest acts of kindness towards others, and the most ordinary tasks we undertake each day, can become expressions of our love for God. What a beautiful reminder that our faith is not only demonstrated through the “big” things we do, but also through the countless small moments that make up our everyday lives.
As we love and serve others, we become a tangible expression of God's love to them. After all, one of the ways God continues to demonstrate His love for people today is through us—through our words, our actions, our compassion and our willingness to care.
At times, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the demands of our own circumstances, let alone the challenges we see unfolding in the world around us. Yet, in the midst of it all, we are reminded that we don't need to do extraordinary things to make a difference. Often, it is the simple, everyday expressions of love that have the greatest impact.
My encouragement to our wonderful College community is this: let us continue to allow the light and love God has placed within us to shine through the way we live, speak, work and care for one another. No act of kindness is too small, and no opportunity to show love is insignificant. Through these everyday moments, may those around us experience something of God's love and be reminded that they are seen, valued and deeply cared for by Him.
As Jesus reminds us in John 13:35:“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
