Year 6

Reading:

In Year 6 Reading, we focused on summarising and synthesising to help us with understanding a text. When summarising we looked at strategies that we could use to re-tell both fiction and non-fiction texts. The students liked using the 5 finger retell over the somebody, wanted, but, so, then strategy. For synthesising, we brought the students attention to what they already know about the world to gather information from texts and create a new understanding by combining the two.

Writing:

In Year 6 Writing, we focused on persuasive texts and text features, learning all about the different techniques that we can use to persuade our readers. Students participated in a debate where they were debating why they should be the class president. It was a smashing success with students getting involved and trying their best to debate which was amazing to see. They also created posters, focusing on their fictional products or their class president campaign trying to sway the class. This was done by using specific techniques such as repetition to convince readers why they should buy their product or vote for them.

Math:

In Year 6 Math, we rebooted and focused on multiplication and division. Students were using multiplicative thinking to solve worded problems and discussed different strategies such as vertical multiplication and box strategy. The favourite strategy was the tried and tested, vertical multiplication strategy. We broke down worded problems into parts so we could answer the questions. In addition to this, we looked at prime and composite numbers, involving factors and multiples with a specific focus on 10.
