In Grade 1, students are developing their skills in additive thinking by learning how numbers can be combined, separated and solved using efficient strategies. A key focus is understanding “friends of 10,” which are pairs of numbers that add together to make 10 (for example, 6 and 4 or 7 and 3). Learning friends of 10 helps students build strong number sense, improve mental maths skills and develop confidence when solving addition and subtraction problems. Students use a range of hands-on materials such as MAB blocks, counters and Unifix blocks to support their learning, model number combinations and strengthen their understanding of mathematical concepts through concrete experiences.
