Welcome and Wominjeka!
Grade Five Artists have been learning about sculpture and form, underpinned by the ancient art of mummification and the very cute representations we see of mummies in contemporary times. We discussed how in ancient times, people were wrapped in strips of fabric to preserve their bodies. We then discussed how they appear as toys, and in cartoons, and the very loose connection between past and present.
Artists also learned about creating a strong and solid structure, called an armature in art, much like a skeleton holds our form together. Using old bottles of various shapes, newspaper, butcher’s paper and tape, they created a solid armature. These armatures are wrapped in calico, using glue to secure the strips as they are wound around the armature. They will be finished in a week or so. Below are the steps so far. We can’t wait to see them complete.
