In Numeracy this term, our Prep students have been learning about addition and place value. Our previous learning about numbers before and after, along with developing our subitising skills, has helped students build a strong foundation for this new learning block.
We have been exploring the idea that two parts can be combined to make a whole. Students are developing their understanding of additive strategies through hands-on activities, games, stories, and investigations.
Our learning goals have included:
- Counting how many items are in each group using 1:1 correspondence
- Combining two parts to find the whole
- Explaining our thinking and sharing strategies with others
To support their understanding, students have enjoyed engaging learning experiences such as telling stories about teddies having picnics and exploring ladybug spots to represent parts and wholes. These playful contexts help children build strong number understanding and confidence when solving problems.
Over the coming weeks, we will begin exploring partitioning numbers and introducing subtraction concepts.
