From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Year 1 families!

What a busy fortnight we have had! We enjoyed our Alpha Show- Hercules, National Simultaneous Story Time and our Fun Run. Our beautiful Year Ones were so respectful but most of all, we have had so much FUN!

Readers-

Please remember to bring in home readers on a Friday. Children should be reading two books a week, focusing on accuracy and fluency. Each night, we aim to add more voice and expression using the punctuation to help.

📝Literacy-

In our Literacy lessons, we have continued to focus on various concepts and skills, such as revision of verbs, nouns, proper nouns, adjectives, conjunctions (joining words) and plurals!

In Writing, we have explored the parts of a narrative (beginning, middle and end). The blue icons at the beginning represent: who, when, where.

The purple icons in the middle represent: the take off (problem), how the character/s are feeling and an idea to solve the problem, and the orange icons represent the 2 actions to solve the problem.

The yellow icons at the end represent: the solution and the consequence (or lesson learnt)

We have also explored report writing where we have researched our favourite animal and we will soon write an information report using facts.

ew/ue- /ew/ as in grew and /ue/ as in glue

ar-  /ar/ as in star

or/ore- /or/ as in fork and /ore/ as in snore

➕➖Maths-

Over the past fortnight, we have introduced Addition and Subtraction and explored the symbols and language that represent these concepts.

We have also explored the link between Addition and Subtraction by learning about Fact Families.

We know we can use the 3 parts of a number sentence to create a ‘Fact Family’ for example:

2+8=10             8+2=10

10-2=8              10-8=2

This week we have focused on working out the difference between two numbers. We can count on from a collection to find the difference and we can count back from a collection to find the difference.

💙Religion – Grief and Loss

Our Religion lessons have begun to explore the concept of grief and loss as a part of our lives.

🌍 Inquiry- Geography-Places and Connections

Our Inquiry lessons have focused on our connection to where we live. We will explore the various natural and man-made environments where we live and how we interact with our environment.

📆 Important dates-

Wednesday 10th June- Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre Excursion
