From the Year 6 Classroom

Dear Parents and Families,

It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 7! This term has continued to be filled with purposeful learning experiences, opportunities for all students to grow as leaders, and a strong sense of community in Year 6.

Literacy

In Reading, we are continuing our exploration of Free Diving by Lorrae Coffin. Students have been engaging in rich discussions about the story’s historical context and its emotional impact. In Writing, we are developing personal responses and encouraging students to reflect deeply and critically about what they read, hear, and see, and express their own perspectives in thoughtful ways.

Numeracy

We have just started our unit on decimals, where the students recognise that the base ten place value system can be extended to decimals (tenths, hundredths and thousandths), to represent parts of whole numbers. calculation strategies can be applied to addition and subtraction of decimal numbers.

Religious Education

This term, our Year 6 students have been exploring the powerful message of Reconciliation through their Religious Education learning. They have examined the importance of building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians, while reflecting on themes of justice, healing, forgiveness, and unity. Through discussions, prayer, artwork, and learning about First Nations perspectives, students have developed a deeper understanding of how they can contribute to a more inclusive and reconciled Australia. As people of faith, they are encouraged to be active participants in creating a community where everyone is valued, respected, and heard.

Inquiry – A Diverse and Connected World

The students are enjoying the ‘Sudden and Extreme Changes to Earth’s Surface' unit, where they will investigating major geological and extreme weather-related events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, drought, bushfires, floods and cyclones.

Leadership Positions Semester Two

Thank you to the students who applied for the Semester 2 School Captain. The students have now voted for two candidates, who they believe will be best suited for the role.

Once this stage in the process is completed, the students who receive the highest number of votes will then be invited to participate in an informal conversation with Mr Mullavey and Mrs Bridgeman.

Successful candidates will be announced at the Sacred Heart Day Mass (Friday 12th June).

Recent Highlights

  • Last Wednesday, Year 6 had the chance to attend the College Market Day. Students enjoyed a fun afternoon filled with delicious treats, exciting activities like “dunking” a past teacher (Mr Mills), and even a shot at a hole-in-one! It was a highlight of the week for many.
