Year 1/2 Unit

We made it to the end of an action packed Term 1, well done!!!
As part of Inquiry this term, Year 1/2 have been learning about our connection to the land on which we learn, play and live. We started by looking at our connection to our own spaces and places we feel safe.
We have studied texts from the Indigenous Dreamtime Stories. These oral texts have been passed down for many generations and tell the stories of how the world around them was created. We learned about Bunjil (the Wedgetail Eagle) and how he created the land and animals, and who also watches over our Earth from the sky. We drew around our hands to create the fabulous Bunjils you see flying above our heads on the corridor outside the classrooms. We used leaves that we collected from the eucalyptus trees around school to do some leaf rubbings. Students then cut out their leaves, and we used them to create the leaves for these trees.
We learned about ‘Tiddalick the Frog’ who drank all the water on the Earth, consequently causing a great drought. He then laughed and released the water, causing a great flood.
We created our own Tiddalick frogs. We also read the story ‘How the Birds got their Colours’. Our students had a fabulous time creating their own colourful birds using different materials.
We read the story ‘The Rainbow Serpent.’ Our students had a wonderful time creating their own colourful rainbow serpents. They also created a collaborative piece where all the students created part of the serpents and they made a giant one as a whole class.
Thank you to all those who have attended the open sessions today to share the students' work with your children. They are all extremely proud of their creations and have been excited to share them with you all!
Have a wonderful Easter break and we look forward to seeing you all for Term Two.
