French News: Quoi de neuf?

Madame Anders

Bonjour tout le monde! Hello everyone. Here are some examples of student learning across the school in French this term.

Foundation: The Foundation students have settled in very well and are speedily picking up some useful basics such as how to say what their name is and how they are feeling. We have recently learnt about the French Easter legend of the flying bells that deliver the chocolate eggs for the egg hunt in France – ask your children if they can tell the story!

Years 1&2: Students started the year by creating posters about themselves and the things they love. They have also started learning the numbers to 21 and have been working on how to say what their favourite animals are.

Year 3: The Year 3s have revised how to describe the weather in French and they created a terrific class display of examples. Some are quite dramatic, and arguably more natural disasters than weather! In French when you talk about the weather you use the verb ‘faire’ which means to make, or do. Quel temps fait-il? would literally translate to ‘What is the weather making?’ An example of the many connections we can notice between English and French is the word ‘temps’ (weather) and our ‘temperature’.

Year 4: The year 4 students have enjoyed learning about the rather peculiar French number system up to 100 (cent/100 – another connection we can make to English) and have practised their recall with the games platform Gimkit which has been a popular way to reinforce some vocabulary. The students have begun to learn their chosen poem for the annual Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition and a number of super stars already know them ‘par cœur’ (by heart).

Years 5&6: The students in the senior unit have been learning about ways to ask and answer questions about likes and dislikes. They have been practising using verbs such as aimer (to like or to love), adorer (to adore), preferer (to prefer) and detester (to hate). The students have been designing posters about their own likes and dislikes for a classroom display using a controlled range of sentence types.
