Year 3 - Middle Unit

This term, students have been working hard on a range of exciting projects that they are looking forward to sharing with their families.
One of these projects is “Woodend Through Time”, a timeline that explores how the land that Woodend was built on has changed over time. Students have been learning about the area from when megafauna roamed the earth, through the arrival of Indigenous Australians, the early settlement of Europeans, and finally to modern-day Woodend.
Students will also be showcasing their historical narratives, which are based on the life of a child during the early settlement of Australia. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and effort students have put into bringing these stories to life.
Another project students have been working on is the creation of a school flag. Using symbolism, students have designed flags that represent what it means to be a Woodend student, our school values, and our connection with the Dja Dja Wurrung people.
Students are excited to invite parents and carers to come and see the work they have been creating. An exact date and time for this event will be shared with families early in Term 2.
Numeracy
Students have recently completed a unit on mental arithmetic, strengthening their ability to solve addition and subtraction problems using a range of mental strategies.
For example, when solving a problem such as 39 + 22, a student might adjust the numbers to make the calculation easier by changing it to 40 + 21. By moving 1 from 22 to 39, students can add to a multiple of ten, making the calculation simpler.
Developing these flexible thinking strategies helps students build strong number sense and will support them when working with larger numbers and more complex written strategies later on in Term 2.
