Swimming Program
Year 4 students participated in an intensive seven day swimming program run by Huntingtower Sports and Aquatic Centre in Mount Waverley. The program covered swimming stroke techniques, speed and efficiency, personal survival skills and water safety.
We would like to say a big thank you to all Year 4 parents who volunteered to attend and assist us during this program.
Literacy – Wonder Plays
This term, we have been studying the novel and film, ‘Wonder’ by R. J. Palacio. Students in 4C enjoyed collaborating in groups and re-enacting some key scenes from the story in which the main character, August, showed resilience. They showed great understanding about the thoughts and feelings of the characters in these scenes. Please enjoy some photos from their re-enactments.
Sustainability Incursion – ‘Closing the Loop’
Our Integrated Studies topic this term is Sustainability. We invited a Recycling Educator from Monash Council to speak to the students on Thursday 13 July on the importance of the 5Rs in Waste management systems which aim to support the Sustainability standards in Monash Council – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose. Here are some recounts from students about what they learned and how they can help our school and Council to become more sustainable. The students will bring the booklets home soon and share the information with their families.
‘Things I learned at the Sustainability Incursion’ – Old things can turn into new things. A plastic bottle can stay in the ocean for more than 450 years. You can’t put a juice box in the recycling bin. Glass can stay in the ocean forever. A fishing line can stay in the water for 600 years.
Revansh 4C
We learned to not put a juice box in the recycling bin. I learned the red bin is for landfill, the green bin is for compost and the yellow bin is for recycling. I learned that polystyrene is highly toxic and that you should not eat it! I also learned that plastic comes from oil. Lastly, I learned that you cannot put electronic devices in a bin.

We learned the process of making items: take, make, waste. Your cardboard Pringle cans and juice boxes go in the red bin because of the silver liner inside. All different items can look like recycled items but might actually have things inside them. Some things don’t break down for over 450 years. Glass bottles will never break down.

I learned: that electric things go in the e-waste, fruit juice boxes go in the red bin, the types of things you can put in the three different bins, which things go in which bin and where the rubbish goes after it goes into the bins.

I learned what to put in each bin and about the 5Rs. I also learned about “take, make and waste”. I learned what happens to the rubbish and how to take care of the environment just by putting things in the right bin. I learned they make cardboard out of trees and they make plastic from oils in the ocean.

'Last week I met Paul and he told us about recycling and waste management. He told us that there is an easy way to do it. First you need to know – Take, Make, Waste – that's what a lot of Australians do. But this isn't the only way, we can also – Take, Make and add the 5R's so then we have less waste in our landfill.

On Thursday, the Year 4's went to the Hall, to learn about what goes into which bin. We learnt a lot of different things, like cardboard milk containers can be recycled in the yellow lid comingled recycling bin but juice boxes cannot because they have a silver lining. Miss Steward even asked if lunch order bags with the little white sticker can be recycled and he said yes. They make the sticker go away

On the 13th of August our class enjoyed an incursion about waste, our planet and sustainability. We were shown which rubbish goes into which bin and the process of rubbish when it's recycled. We also learnt new things, such as plastic is made from oil, tissue boxes can go in the yellow lid recycling bin (even with that little bit plastic attached). Did you know that disposable nappies can live for 475 years and that a polystyrene tray can live for 60 years!! We were given a 'Monash Kids Recycling Book' to complete in the classroom. The book has facts, questions and games. I learnt things I didn't know.'

Yesterday a guy called Paul came and he works at Monash City Council. It was about how long it takes for rubbish to breakdown and which stuff goes in which bin. It was so fun and cool, he was the best, I love this school. The best bit ever was that he even taught Ms. Steward something. Did you know that glass is made of sand, limestone and soda ash. So, recycle your tomato sauce bottles!'
