Grade 3 News

Welcome to Week 4 in Grade 3!

This term, our class has been reading Matilda by Roald Dahl.

Students have enjoyed getting to know Matilda and the other characters while learning about themes like courage, kindness, and standing up for what’s right. We’ve been discussing the story, completing activities, and building our reading and vocabulary skills along the way.

Matilda is the story of a clever little girl with a big love for reading. Even though her parents don’t appreciate her talents, Matilda teaches herself amazing skills and finds comfort in books. When she starts school, she meets the kind and caring Miss Honey, but also has to deal with the frightening headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. As Matilda discovers just how powerful her mind really is, she uses her abilities to stand up to unfairness, help Miss Honey, and make her world a kinder place.

During maths, we have been looking at the unit of Place Value. Students learnt some larger 5, 6 or 7 digit numbers. We working on partitioning these numbers and looking at the value of each place, such as one, tens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundre. In our next unit, addition and subtraction, we are going to be looking at adding and subtracting two digit numbers using a range of different strategies.

In religion we are looking at the unit 'Followers of Jesus'.

We are looking at the story of Bartimus which shows us how people followed Jesus. Bartimaeus was a blind man who sat by the road outside Jericho, hoping people would help him. One day, he heard that Jesus was passing by. Even though he couldn’t see, Bartimaeus called out loudly for Jesus to help him. Some people told him to be quiet, but he only called louder because he believed Jesus could heal him. Jesus stopped, asked Bartimaeus what he wanted, and Bartimaeus said he wanted to see again. Jesus told him that his faith had healed him, and straight away Bartimaeus could see. Filled with joy, he followed Jesus on the road.

A reminder that reading diaries need to be brought on Fridays. Awards will be given out during our weekly Grade 3 assemblies.
