Victorian School MTB Series

Castlemaine Secondary College, in partnership with the Castlemaine Rocky Riders, proudly hosted Round Six of the Victorian School Mountain Bike Series on Saturday 6 September.

The event brought together over 130 riders from across the state, making for an exciting day of competition and community spirit.

The course once again showcased the best of our local terrain, winding through Kalimna Park bushland and the college grounds, including the ever-popular stairs section. Riders competed across multiple categories, from seasoned racers testing their speed and endurance, to first-time competitors enjoying the supportive and welcoming atmosphere.

The day was not only a sporting success, but also a community celebration. Castlemaine Secondary College Council and Parent Clubs ran the barbecue, supported by generous local sponsors, with proceeds going towards our Outdoor Education Program. Special thanks go to the parent and staff organisers—Julian Vearing, Cole Waters, Sarah Fletcher and Sally Melville—together with parent volunteers Hannah Vellacott, Liz Grainger, Liz Duthie, Daydd Kelly, Affrica McCarthy and Kate O’Sullivan. A particular acknowledgement goes to Huw Vellacott, who coordinated community sponsorships and arranged many of the logistics for the BBQ. We also thank our student helpers Jude O’Sullivan and Archie Culph, whose efforts kept riders and spectators well-fed throughout the day. Thanks to Angus Melville for his photography skills throughout the day.

Principal Justin Hird reflected on the significance of the event:“It was wonderful to see our college grounds buzzing with riders and families from across Victoria. The sense of community connectedness, teamwork and support really highlighted what makes Castlemaine such a special place. We are so proud to play our part in hosting an event that celebrates both sport and community.”

A huge thank you goes out to our generous sponsors—Maxi IGA, Don KR and Bakers Delight—who donated 100% of the food and drinks for the day. Their generosity ensured the event was not only well-supported but also a true celebration of community spirit.

Congratulations to Angus Melville and Alana Fletcher who won their race division on the day.

With strong numbers and plenty of smiles, the Castlemaine round has once again cemented itself as a highlight of the school mountain biking calendar.
