Mt Alexander Schools Chess Challenge

Castlemaine Secondary College once again had the honour of hosting the Mt Alexander Schools Chess Challenge, and the day was a resounding success.
This year’s event brought together 160 students from 20 primary and secondary schools, with participants travelling from across our local area as well as Kyneton, Bendigo, Gisborne and even Werribee.
In the Primary Section, Girton Grammar took out the overall team title, with local school Winter’s Flat achieving a fantastic second place. In the Secondary Section, Werribee Secondary finished first, closely followed by Girton in second place and Castlemaine Secondary College proudly securing third. The top three teams in each section have now qualified for the Chess Victoria State Finals to be held next term.
The Mt Alexander Schools Chess Challenge began 21 years ago as part of CSC’s transition program and has since grown into the premier state-wide not-for-profit chess competition. Over the past two decades, more than 4,000 students have competed, with many going on to represent their schools at the state finals. Importantly, the event has also raised more than $200,000, funds which have been vital in supporting and expanding chess programs in both primary and secondary schools.
CSC students played an outstanding role in hosting the event, taking on administrative and organisational responsibilities with courtesy and competence. Their efforts were crucial to the smooth running of the tournament, and feedback from visiting teachers and parents was overwhelmingly positive.
We congratulate all participants on their achievements and thank the MASCC committee for their continued efforts in ensuring the growth and success of this unique event.
Thanks, Mark Johansson
