My welcome to Huntingtower

It was the first Friday morning of Term One and I was manning the morning crossing as I have gone on to do for the remainder of Term One. It wasn’t the first student who said ‘good morning’ to me, or the first student to ask ‘how are you?’ that garnered my attention: it was the twentieth; and then the thirtieth; and then the fortieth. By the end of my twenty minutes I had pause for reflection: Where am I?

It has been a wonderful pleasure to join the Huntingtower School community this term in the role of Vice Principal for teaching and learning. I have the great fortune to be learning from Mrs Susan Swan throughout Terms One and Two before she sets her sights on travel and the genteel life. What has struck me, from the crossing to the classroom, is the character of the young people that we are privileged to call students of Huntingtower. Whether it be through a greeting, through their passion for their House, their care for each other or their aptitude for learning, it is such a tremendous joy to have the chance to work with them each and every day.

This term I have had the chance to sample the house carnivals, to take the 20km hike on Year 10 camp, to share in my inaugural Be Kind Huntingtower Day, and to join the Year 1 ‘Giraffes’ for their weekly reading group. Together with the colleagues and parents I have had the chance to meet, it has been such a warm and caring welcome for which I am very grateful.

My role oversees teaching, learning and internal operations at the School. As the year goes on I will use this forum as a chance to share ideas and seek thoughts from the school community; I want the chance to listen to you as to what makes learning at Huntingtower so good and where we have opportunities to grow.

For now, I wish everyone a restful school holiday break and Easter celebration. To the students heading to the bush or overseas on school tours all the very best for what awaits and the adventures that will unfold.
