Principal's Report

“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad.”

1 Kings 3:5-14

Throughout this term, we have been exploring what it means to have an understanding heart. It sits, I believe, at the centre of wisdom. Not something abstract or distant, but something lived and practised in the way we engage with the world and with one another.

Across the School, this idea has found expression in a number of meaningful ways. In the Junior School, Harmony Day provided a joyful opportunity for students to celebrate their cultural heritage, sharing something of who they are with pride and enthusiasm. In the Senior School, our Close the Gap activities invited students to reflect more deeply on the experiences of Indigenous Australians and to consider how we might contribute to a more equitable future. As part of this, students participated in creating a Sea of Hands, inspired by the work of ANTAR, forming the Aboriginal flag through the collective contributions of many.

Underlying these experiences is a deeper idea of what it means to grow in wisdom. The Hebrew word for wisdom, chokmah, is closely connected to the idea of craftsmanship or skill. It suggests that wisdom is shaped over time through intention, practice and experience. It begins with a willingness to look beyond our own immediate perspective, to listen carefully, reflect thoughtfully and respond with care.

These are the qualities we seek to nurture at Huntingtower, in classrooms, in conversations and in shared experiences. They are formed in the small, everyday moments as much as in the significant ones.

May the pages that follow offer a glimpse of this in action.
