From the Year 5 Classroom

Year 5 has made a wonderful start to Term 3!

Students have returned to school with enthusiasm, positive attitudes, and a real eagerness to learn. It has been fantastic to see everyone settling back into classroom routines so quickly and embracing the exciting learning opportunities ahead. We are looking forward to welcoming all grandparents and special visitors to our Grandparents' Day celebrations on Thursday, 30 July. This is always a special occasion, and our students are excited to share their learning and spend time with their loved ones. We also wish our Year 5 and Year 6 students the very best of luck as they compete in the Lightning Premiership. It promises to be a fun-filled day of action-packed sport, teamwork, and school spirit. We know our students will represent our school with enthusiasm, determination, and excellent sportsmanship.

Literature

Our Year 5 students are halfway through reading Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. Set in early colonial Australia, this engaging historical novel has provided students with valuable insights into the lives of convicts and the challenges they faced. Along the way, students have been developing their comprehension, vocabulary, and analytical skills while exploring important themes of resilience, courage, and hope. Later this semester, students will begin reading The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor. Inspired by Melbourne's famous Cole's Book Arcade, this imaginative adventure promises to captivate readers with its rich language, memorable characters, and fascinating historical connections. We look forward to continuing our reading journey and using these wonderful stories to inspire thoughtful discussions and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Reading Diaries

Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.

Specialist Classes

Year 5 students will continue to participate in Specialist classes on Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This semester, our Year 5 students have begun learning Auslan during lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are excited to see them develop their communication skills as they learn Australia's sign language.

Students may wear their PE uniform on Thursdays and Fridays.

Learning Support Officer

Our Year 5 Learning Support Officer is Katrina Carpenter who will be working with us from Monday to Thursday.
