From the Year 4 Classroom

A friendly reminder that Year 4 students are asked to bring a shoebox (or a similar-sized box) for an upcoming art project. To ensure everyone is ready to participate, please send boxes to school by Tuesday, 4th August.  

Literacy: 

Students are continuing to enjoy reading Storm Boy and have been highly engaged throughout the story. We have shared some wonderful discussions about the characters, the wildlife featured in the book, and the beautiful, vast countryside of the Coorong where the story is set. These conversations have helped students make meaningful connections to Australia's unique natural environment and landscapes. 

We are looking forward to finishing the novel over the next couple of weeks. To celebrate completing the book, students will have the opportunity to watch the movie and compare it with the story we have enjoyed reading together. 

Numeracy: 

Students have recently completed our Multiplication and Division unit, and it has been wonderful to see the progress they have made. Many students achieved excellent results in their post-assessments. 

As we move forward, we will continue to focus on building times table fluency during each maths session. This will involve a mix of engaging whole-class activities, targeted teaching, and independent practice. 

One of the class favourites has been Multiplication Tic-Tac-Toe, a fun game that encourages quick thinking and maths fact recall. We'd love for families to give it a try at home—it's a simple and enjoyable way to practise times tables together while having some fun! 

We have also begun our next mathematics unit on Angles. Students are learning to identify and compare right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles. We have been exploring angles in everyday objects and the environment around us, helping students make real-world connections to their learning.  

Inquiry: 

Students have been exploring the topic “Our Voice, Our Place”, learning about the important role that governments play in our communities and across Australia. As part of this learning, students have been investigating the three levels of government and the services they provide. 

We have discussed how: 

• The Federal Government makes decisions and laws that apply to all Australians. 
• The State Government is responsible for laws and services within each state and territory. 
• The Local Government (Moira Shire Council) focuses on the needs of our local community, with local representatives elected to make decisions on behalf of residents. 

Through class discussions and activities, students are developing an understanding of how governments help support and improve the lives of individuals and communities at each level. 

Religion: In Religion, students have been learning about how Jesus used parables to teach important lessons about values and how we should treat others. Through exploring these stories, students are developing an understanding of the messages Jesus shared with his followers and how these teachings can guide our actions today.
